U13 & U14 v Gwernyfed

Aberystwyth v Gwernyfed U13s & U14s Away Sunday 6 December

Aber U13s left Plas Crug with a full squad who were full of confidence after a good start to season which saw them retain their Llanidloes tournament title.
Weather conditions had improved as Aber elected to play against a strong wind, from the kick off Aber’s backrow were up for the challenge of playing against a much bigger pack as Aber’s open side Lewis Price set the tone which a massive tackle which allowed the other two members of Ioan Morris and Gwion Jones to start scavenging for the ball.

Aber were confident enough to get the ball wide so early on which allowed winger Reece James to out pace the cover defence for an early score. Gwernyfed had their best passage of play for 20 minutes as their big runs started to get the ball, however the backrow and outside half Iestyn Thomas were more than able to cope which allowed Connor Burns to jackle and win good turnover ball which again allowed Aber to pass the ball wide, Aber were awarded a penalty close to the try line where Burns crashed over for Aber’s second try.

Two further tries where scored in the first half again great defence and quick turn over ball allowed Aber’s big ball carries Price,  Josh Ballard and Josh the freedom to get some stream up and make some big in roads into Gwernyfed defence. Where scrum half Aiden O’Regan was allowed freedom to dart though the gaps created , he would linked with his outside half Thomas and centres Richie Rickets and Aled Phillips who would go onto score twice.

Aber’s back three of wingers Reece (1), Deri (1) & the pocket battleship Ifan Evans  at full back had a lot of ball to run with and they all showed great pace to score some long range tries although they will need to work on their celebrations.

However Aber didn’t get it all there own way as Gwernyfed pressed for there first score but some dogged defiance stopped Gwernyfed as they simply ran out of ideas.
Coach Wayne Thomas was full of praise after game for all the squad as they ran out 43-0 winners.

The U14s were losing 25-0 to a much bigger side when the game was abandoned half way though the second half by a serious looking neck injury to Aber’s openside Arron Bebb-Worral who required hospital treatment. Happily I can report that Arron was realised from hospital that evening with no ill effects. Many thanks to Aber & Gwernyfed coaches and both sets of parents who assisted during this worrying period.
