Hard Earned Home Win

Aberystwyth 19 – Crymych 11

On a bright September afternoon Plascrug looked in tip-top condition to welcome players and supporters for this WRU Plate H1 Group match against Crymych – It’s good to be back!

Crymych kicked off but it was Aber who showed early dominance with some strong carries and efficient recycling but the defence stood firm until Carwyn Evans took matters into his own hands when receiving the ball on half-way he chipped the on-rushing defence re-gathered the bouncing ball and burst through to score the opening under the posts. Mathew Hughes converted to make the score 7 – 0. After their early dominance Aber had to play second fiddle to Crymych for the remainder of the half. Gav Thomas at outside-half had quite an influential spell when he kicked two penalties and created a lovely try for skipper Carwyn Phillips to score. Thomas waltzed through would-be tacklers from half-way and from a timely off-load Phillips forced his way over for a try. Thomas’s second penalty took the half-time score to 7 – 11 to Crymych. The only other feature of the half was a yellow card shown to Carwyn Evans for a high tackle.

Aber started the second half full of purpose and resolve and held the upper hand for long spells. All the forwards looked keen to get their hands on the ball with some strong carries quick re-cycling which kept Crymych under pressure. From a strong carry Lee Evans burst through a tackle and fed the supporting skipper Arwel Lloyd who in utter desperation put in a lovely grubber kick which flanker Steffan Rattray did excellently to follow through and win the race for the touch-down. Mathew Hughes hit the post with his conversion attempt from the touch-line to make the score 12 – 11. Aber made a few changes and brought on some fresh legs from a very strong bench but their dominance continued unabated. Mathew Hughes stamped his authority on proceedings when he made a lovely break from a Guto Jones off-load but unfortunately what seemed like a try-scoring pass was knocked-on by a supporting runner. Mathew then decided to cut out this passing nonsense and scored a beautiful individual try when slicing through the Crymych defence from half-way to score by the posts. He also converted his try to close out the scoring at 19 – 11 to Aber. Aber unfortunately suffered a second yellow card towards the end of the game when Crymych enjoyed a spell of pressure on the Aber line but resolute defence kept them out.

This was a very pleasing win for Aber in a hard-fought game played by two fully committed sides in good spirit throughout. There were obvious signs of rustiness by both sides but you couldn’t question their commitment and determination to serve up a very competitive encounter much enjoyed by supporters of both teams.
