Arwel Lloyd Profile

Player Profile: Arwel Lloyd.

Arwel is the current club captain. He is thirty four years of age and farms near Caersws. He is a 6’4” (1.93m), 19.5 stone (123.8kg) second row forward, is married to Sarah and has two sons and a daughter. He was persuaded to join Aber in 2005 by Kevin Bryan after being spotted playing in Machynlleth’s sevens team which beat both Aber A and B teams in the previous year’s Mach sevens tournament. Arwel’s rugby CV is strong and impressive and, like his predecessor, Lee ‘Truck’, he is a popular captain who leads by example on the field. His favourite drink is banana milk shake (honestly!!).

Where did you learn your rugby?  Machynlleth rugby club.

Who was the main influence early on in your rugby career? My father. He played No 8 for Mach for 30 years.

Do you play any other sports? No.

Have you ever played against Aber? Yes, at 7s and XV a side.

How do you rate the current Aber side? Its good and has the potential to become a lot better.

Which of the four Welsh regional sides do you support? None. I used to support the Celtic Warriors before they were disbanded.

Which of the current Aber squad would you NOT want to share a room with on tour? Osin Canney. I think he’d snore all night.

Apart from the props, which player in the Aber squad do you admire most and why? Dan Binks, for his athleticism.

What are your career and sporting ambitions? To be a successful farmer and to keep playing rugby for Aber.

What did you want to be when you were younger? A vet, but I didn’t want to study for seven years so I became a farmer.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and how? My parents, by their example.

What has been your biggest achievement in rugby? Being selected for the Welsh Crawshays XV to play against Cambridge University in their pre-Varsity match game in the 2010/11 season. Also, playing for RGC, Llandovery and Scarlets under 25s.

And your biggest disappointment? Not taking the opportunities to go further in rugby.

What has been your most embarrassing moment on the rugby field? Playing against Yr Hendy when I dropped the ball each time they kicked off. I was so bad that their captain instructed their kicker to aim for me at each restart!

When you are not working, training or playing rugby, what do you like to do? I like to spend time with my family.

Do you cook? What is your favourite meal? No, I don’t cook. My favourite meal is steak and chips.

If you were a contestant on Bake Off, what would you cook? A bacon roll.

Which of your team-mates at Aber would you most like to see on Strictly, and why? Ian Ellis. He’s got the quickest feet.

Which of the current Aber squad makes you laugh most, and why? Sam Hesden, because he doesn’t think at all before opening his mouth!

Who do you consider to be the best sportsperson ever? Roger Federer.

Which current rugby international would you most like to meet, and why? The South Africa second row forward, Eben Etzebeth (Height 2.04m, Weight 123kg).

Do you have any ambitions to travel? If so, where to? Yes, back to New Zealand, for the people and the sights, the countryside.

What matters most to you in your life outside rugby? My family.

What annoys you most about the current game – laws, structure etc.? Refs who don’t understand the game well enough and the laws that prevent you from dealing with players who don’t get penalised for always being offside or in your way in the rucks. In the old days, if a player was in your way, lying between you and the ball, a good ‘shoeing’ would make sure that he didn’t do it again. You can’t get away with that these days.

If you could be the best-looking man in the world, which front-row forward would you want to look like? Graham Rowntree, the ex-England prop.

Do you think you will ever be good enough to play in the front row? No, but I may have to try!
