Second Team Come So Close

Aberystwyth Athletic 6 – v – 17 Newcastle Emlyn 2nds

Aberystwyth athletic welcomed NCE 2nds to Plascrug in what proved to be a highly entertaining game with the visitors running out eventual winners 17 – 6.

The early exchanges between both sides showed that this was going to be a close encounter as both teams seemed evenly matched. After a period of pressure from NCE it seemed as though Aberystwyth had held their opponents out, but a defensive mistake by the home team allowed the visitors outside half to cross unopposed for a try that they converted for a 7 point lead. This spurred the home team into action and after some concerted pressure in their opponents’ half they were awarded a penalty which captain Daniel Elwyn converted for to make the score 7 – 3.

The Athletic now enjoyed a period of sustained pressure but were unable to convert their chances the best of which saw centre Craig Debell held up inches short of the line. The resulting clearance kick deep into the Aberystwyth half caused some confusion between the home players which resulted in them gifting a try to their opponents for a 12 – 3 half time lead.

The second half started in the same vein as the first half had ended with Aberystwyth failing to capitalise on the chances they created. This seemed to spur NCE into action and they produced some excellent play between both forwards and backs and saw them going close to the Aber line on several occasions. They were only held out by some last gasp tackling, the pick of which saw flanker Sion Davies produce one of the best tackles seen at Plascrug in many a day to deny the NCE winger.

Further pressure in the NCE half saw Aberystwyth awarded another penalty, converted by Daniel Elwyn , making the score 12 - 6. With less than 10 minutes remaining Aberystwyth went in search of the winning try, but stout defence from the visitors held the home team out and saw them run in from the half way line for the final try of the game.

The home crowd were well entertained by a fast flowing game where the visitors deservedly took the spoils but had errors by the hosts to thank for their first two tries. The entertainment value of the game was helped very much by the officiating of match referee Ceri Harris who was consistent throughout and allowed the game to flow.

Aberystwyth Athletic head to Pembroke next week looking to bounce back from this defeat.
