Champion Fund-Raising

In the seven days up to Sunday 10th May, players, officials, members and supporters of Aberystwyth Rugby Club took part in a walking/running/cycling marathon organised by Aber centre, Matthew Hughes to raise money for Bronglais Hospital. Using a GPS app, Strava, participants from all over the country, but mainly from the Aber area, did their bit for this worthy cause. In very favourable weather, some walked, ran or cycled daily, while others took it more casually. But more importantly, they all donated to achieve the targeted contribution of £2,500 by covering a total of 2,500 miles.

A dedicated website enabled progress to be recorded and updated each day so that those taking part could see how close the event was moving towards its target. In a fitting self-tribute Matthew himself won the event but it was clearly a success and worthy achievement by the rugby club as a whole and those who support it.

The club is very grateful to Matthew for organising the event and to all those who participated and contributed towards the collection. This event, and the club’s participation in the ‘Scarlets in the Community’ programme of distributing food parcels, have been very well received.

These are difficult times for the club and for those small businesses and individuals who sponsor its activities. Hopefully, they will see that, while it may not be active on the rugby field at present, the club is working hard to raise funds to ease the strain in the current crisis and that they will be encouraged to continue their generous sponsorship when things return to normal.
