Windy Whitland

Whitland 26 Aberystwyth 17

Aberystwyth ventured to Whitland on an overcast, breezy Saturday to try and gain the point needed to win Group H1 of the WRU Districts Plate competition.  Whitland started aggressively and won two early offences after the tackle which could have gone either way.  Sadly this was the story of the match.  Aber won their first penalty when scrum half Charles Thomas tackled Mike Phillips, the ex Welsh international on his return to Whitland, and tried to play the ball.

Things went worse for Aber when after 6 minutes their centre was yellow carded after a tackle.  The same referee yellow carded the same player near the end of the game a fortnight ago.  The resulting penalty was missed.  Play fluctuated around the half way line until a great run from Ben Jones lead to a penalty on the Whitland 22.  Quick thinking by Charles Thomas enabled Mathew Hughes to force himself to take the lead for Aber.  The wind taking the conversion wide.  The game settled down into a mis-pitch slog with neither side being able to gain advantage, until a speculative kick from Whitland led to a penalty kick from Their full back Nico Setaro.

Aber were slowly getting on top and then after a good chip from Carwyn Evans good ground was made.  Again Ben Jones made good ground and despite being tackled slipped the ball to Matthew Hughes who used his strength to go over near the post.  Mathew also converted the try.  On the stroke of half time a long run from Whitland No 8 Jack Mason made inroads into the Aber 22.  The forwards then bundled over hooker Marc Jones from a lineout.  The conversion was missed and the halftime whistle was blown.

Over the halftime break the wind increased and Whitland made good use of it.  A good chip from Setaro enabled Whitland wing Olly Hughes to go over in the corner and take the lead 13-12, which they were able to hold until the end.  Aber were struggling to get out of their 22 with the strength of the wind.  From a goal line drop out Setaro kicked a good drop goal.  Again after some loose kicking Whitland gained a line out in the Aber 22.  They moved the ball quickly out to their left winger who again went over in the corner, which Setaro converted.  Setaro later kicked another penalty when Aber were caught offside on their own 5m line.

Aber didn’t give up and with the wind dropping a little started to gain a foothold in Whitland territory.  A good drive from a lineout allowed the Aber pack to force Iestyn Thomas (junior) over for a try in the corner.  Unfortunately, the conversion drifted just wide in the wind to miss the bonus point.  There is another chance in a fortnight’s time at home to Milford Haven, to gain the point needed to top the group.
