U11 Win at Furnace

It was an early start for the Aberystwyth U11s & 12s as they travelled to Furnace, they were joined by Aber U13s & 14 whose fixture against Felinfoel had unfortunately been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch on Saturday.

As we arrived in Furnace we were told that the ground staff had been working on the ground to make in playable from 8 o’clock that morning. Thanks to their efforts the U11 fixture along with the U12s fixture would go a head.

It’s fair to say that conditions were very very  wet underfoot and rain during the game just increased the difficulty to play attractive rugby. However this did not stop the boys from both clubs playing entertaining rugby and being brave enough to put together a few intricate moves.
Aber U11’s played first and took a half time lead of 21-0 with two tries from centre Will Beckham and one from outside half Reuben Price who was successful in all the conversations. Aber tackled like demons to the delight of the large away crowd who were very vocal in their support.

As the rain fell the larger Furnace pack began to take a foot hold and after some excreted pressure managed to seek over in the corner. With the game in the balance the Aber front row of Ifan, Adam Bradley and Owen Williams on debt were able to gain ascendancy with the help of the 2nd rows Ruben Minnie and the best forward on display Osain Bebb-Worral. This allowed lively scrum half Owen Pugh to obtain good possessing and bring in Aber’s wingers Joe and Glain more into the game with their direct running. The best move of the match saw Aber’s full back Oisin being squeezed out in the corner after the forwards and backs combined with some slick inter passing. Aber’s two first half try scores Reuben & Will were able to add one more each this gave Will his first ever hat- trick!

Many thanks should go to Kevin Pullman the ex Aberystwyth and Furnace player who helped Head Coaches Richard Morris and Darren Hathaway organise the fixture and tickets to the Scarlets v Connacht game afterwards, where they formed the guard of honour as the teams ran out.
