Tight U12 Game.

Aberystwyth U12’s v Aberaeron U12’s Friday 31st March 2017

Aberaeron 7 v Aberystwyth 7

Friday night saw the U12’s make the small journey south to play rivals Aberaeron. The venue was changed at the last minute from the rugby club, which was deemed too wet, to the school fields. This change of venue threw a few families as frantic telephone calls were made 2 minutes prior to kick off.

Aberystwyth lacked the leadership of their half backs, who both were injured, and this link proved to be the downfall as the forwards kept picking and driving forward, ignoring the cries from the wide opens spaces out wide. Credit is due to the Aberystwyth team who went 7 nil down very early on when Aberaeron attacked straight from the kick off and were able to smuggle the ball over the line under the sticks.

The first half was all Aberaeron but the Aberystwyth defence held strong, with some determined tackling and jackling. With the clock ticking down, Aberystwyth were able to break away for Mason Lees to crash over under the post, allowing outside half Oisin Pennant to bring the game level at half time.

The tale of the second half was much the same as the first half, with Aberaeron throwing everything at the Aberystwyth line but could not get over. Both teams had a penalty chance - Aberystwyth chose to ignore a certain 3 points and run theirs from 5 yards out and under the posts but were squeezed out in the corner. With time up, Aberaeron were awarded a penalty on the 22 but 15 yards in from touch, Aberaeron elected to kick for goal to take the spoils but luckily for Aberystwyth the kick didn’t threaten the post and the game was drawn.
Training continues on Friday and we travel to Bala for the final away trip of the season on Sunday.
