U12 Win at Welshpool

Welshpool v Aberystwyth U12’s Sunday 27th November

Welshpool 26 v Aberystwyth 47

Aber U12s left for Welshpool full of confidence following a good win against Lampeter the previous week.  It was an eventful trip up for a few of the families travelling up with breakfast making a reappearance.

Things didn’t start off too well with Aber knocking on from the kick off, gifting Welshpool a scrum in a very good attacking position. Welshpool’s number 8 seized the opportunity to pick up and run unchallenged to score the game’s first converted try. Aber were able to apply pressure on Welshpool who were penalised repeatedly at the breakdown, which allowed Aber to gain field position by kicking for touch. However this field position was wasted with players running off on their own and having the ball stripped from them.

Welshpool were able to capitalise on one of these turnovers for their number 8 again to charge over from long range. Going down 14-0 kick started Aber, whose forwards Adam Bradley, Ifan Blake and Owen Jones began to hit rucks. This allowed scrum half Aled Morris to feed the dynamic back row of Ruben Meaney, Osian Bebb-Worrall & debutant Mason Lees who started to make the hard yards.  Aber’s outside half Reuben Price now fed his centres Will Beckham & Ciaran Mathias who were able to get over the gain line. With Morris receiving quick ball, Price was able to cross twice to score in quick succession and, with his conversion being successful, bring the game level.

From the kick off Aber’s second rows Tory Morris and Josh Pugh–Jones linked well and were able to release Lees on a barnstorming run to score under the posts.  Following a good move by Aber’s back three of Sion Ifans, Gain Jones and Oisin Pennant at full back, Welshpool were again penalised at the breakdown. Price shaped to kick for position and with the Welshpool team reacting to cover the line, he tapped and went the other way, scoring his third try. Lees was to add another try following a good run by another debutant Huw Gwynne before half time.

Aber changed a few positions at half time, with new outside half Pennant making a clean break to feed Lees who crossed for his hat-trick. Welshpool weren’t finished either and were able to work their No 8 into space where he crossed for his hat-trick and, shortly afterwards, a fourth. Aber had the final word when Welshpool failed to find touch, and winger Mathias charged forward to draw his man, which allowed full back Price to cross in the corner.

Special thanks should go to Aber’s coaches Richard, Anthony and Andi. There is training again on Friday 6pm till 7pm  with our last scheduled game before Christmas, a home fixture against COBRA, on Sunday.
