Hard Luck for Youth Team

Aberystwyth Youth 10 – v – Cwmafon Youth 26

As a result of last minute withdrawals and injuries Aber fielded a restructured, below-strength squad for their quarter final Welsh Cup match against a strong Cwmafon side.

Despite having a strong pack, Cwnafon opted for uncontested scrums from the start which further disrupted Aber’s tactics for the match. It was a hard fought battle from the start with Cwmafon with both sides having periods of dominance. But the strength of the visitors’ back line showed eventually and they scored two converted tries in the first half against the hosts’ single penalty to lead 3 - 14 at half time.

The second half started in the same competitive spirit but Aber were unfortunate to suffer a couple of injuries which further disrupted the team with players now playing out of position. One of Aber’s replacements was yellow carded so the team was reduced to 14 players. Cwmafon took full advantage of this to score another converted try. Aber then raised their game especially up front and replied with their own try by second row forward Dylan Davies, converted by Mason Jones.

Unfortunately another of Aber’s players was then yellow carded and the side played the final ten minutes of the match with just 14 players. Again Cwmafon took full advantage of this to score another try, this time unconverted, to close the score at 10 – 26.

This was a disappointing result but Aber, under their hard working coach Wayne Thomas, did very well to reach the quarter finals and can look forward to next season’s campaign with confidence.
